About
Quarrington Quarry
Quarrington Quarry is an existing hard rock and sand quarry in County Durham, in the north- east of England.
The quarry forms part of County Durham’s industrial and mining legacy, having been worked since at least the 1850s. There were originally two distinct quarries: Old Quarrington and Cold Knuckle. However, these were subsequently merged into a single quarry, and together produce various grades of high- quality construction aggregate that is used in a variety of end- uses in the construction industry. The site also imports materials, such as soils, clays and brick left over from construction projects, for use in the restoration of the site following quarrying.
The current proposal, as outlined below, seeks approval for a relatively minor change to the working and restoration scheme in what was formerly the Cold Knuckle part of the quarry.
Location
Quarrington Quarry is located 6km (4 miles approx.) to the south-east of the City of Durham. More specifically, the quarry is located between the villages of Quarrington Hill and Old Quarrington. The A1(M) lies to the west of the quarry entrance and it is via this motorway that the construction material produced from the quarry is predominantly distributed.
