Restoration

Quarrington Quarry

The restoration strategy is driven by ecological considerations as well as the ambition to create a landform that fits in with its surroundings so it is sustainable in the longer term. Accordingly, the whole area will be restored to nature conservation after use with increased public access. More specifically, Old Quarrington would be allowed to naturally establish as a magnesian limestone grassland, with species rich calcareous grassland on Cold Knuckle, established from seed mixes that match the local range of plants. The restored site would include:

  • Scrub/woodland edge
  • Hedgerows
  • Calcareous grassland
  • Magnesian Limestone grassland
  • Dew ponds
  • Reinstatement of Bridleway no. 34/35.

Aftercare of the site is extremely important for the successful establishment of vegetation. This would comprise the maintenance of each area of the site by Tarmac for five years following completion.
